The event featured a panel discussion focused on the emerging building technology of mass timber, including an explanation of what mass timber is and some of the potential benefits of its use in construction, such as: cost efficiency; fire resistance; and lesser environmental impact compared to traditional construction methods.
Mass timber is engineered wood manufactured by binding boards/pieces of wood together with adhesives (or other methods of binding the wood together) to form the composite material, and is typically used in place of concrete. The production of mass timber, compared to that of steel or concrete, emits less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and therefore should greatly benefit the environment if construction methods migrate towards mass timber.
